Jerry Buis passed away at his home in Snyder Indian on July 8, 2023. Jerry was one of the four original camping club kids that founded the Ticonderoga Sports Club that evolved into Live Free USA. Jerry was an officer in Live Free for decades, and was a first aid instructor and headed the Survival Medics group through the 80’s and 90’s. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Jerry also worked as a Red Cross volunteer and worked at disasters throughout the United States. He shared many campfires and adventures with Live Free members throughout the years and was a key factor in developing Camp Independence in the late 1960’s. He will be sorely missed by us all. He is survived by his wife Pat and daughter Patricia who are also active with Live Free.

Note: This is the second founder to pass away in the past twelve months, and the sixth core group member lost within the past three years

While the annual meeting is still months away (March 25, 2022) Live Free USA is now accepting nominations for the Board of Directors. Whereas most previous board members have been located in the Great Lakes region, we are a national organization and are very much committed to broadening our leadership. Since board meetings are now held online, and projects are shared on various internet platforms there is no reason that members from coast-to-coast cannot become officers. As of this date there are at least three directorships that are up for reelection and three currently unfilled positions that are available. Officers are elected for three-year terms and are expected to take on various duties and projects as specified in the bylaws. Directorship is an opportunity to be a part of America’s original survival and preparedness organization. Members can place themselves or others into nomination by e-mailing survivorjj@aol.com or writing to Live Free USA, PO Box, 3295 Munster IN 46321. Please provide a brief description of why you want to be nominated.

William Robb passed away on July eighth 2022 after a short but valiant battle with lymphoma. Bill Robb was one of Live Free USA’s founding members. The organization started off as an informal group of high school kids who liked to go camping. Being rather poor, we had to put together improvised equipment and hike or bike to local woods. We also had to face the inevitable challenges of survival on Chicago’s Southside.

Bill was in the Fenger High school ROTC and then majored in mathematics at the University of Illinois Chicago campus. Just out of collage he joined the Army and was posted to the Pentagon were he did programming and coding in the early days of the computer age. After the Army he was employed for many years by Sears where he helped establish their order and inventory tracking systems. Later he was employed as a department manager for Blue Cross / Blue Shield. Bill and his wife Laurie resided in Munster Indiana. They had a daughter Melissa and two grandsons. In the early days of the organization Bill was a key factor in developing our organization and its philosophy. He participated in numerous campouts, and events as the organization grew from a small local sports club to a nationally recognized self-reliance advocacy and education organization.

While Bill never held an official office in Live Free USA he performed many essential tasks until only a few weeks before his passing.Bill was loyal, intelligent, and well grounded. William Robb will be greatly missed and always remembered. His contribution to the organization and his friendship will live on.

We deeply regret to announce the passing of Keith Allen Simpson at the age of 78. Keith was a valued member and former officer of Live Free USA. He was a Vietnam War veteran who joined along with several other veterans back in the 1980’s. Keith participated in dozens of events and training activities over four decades, and often made presentations for the members at Camp Independence. Keith is the fifth Live Free current or past Director to pass in the last three years. He is one of the steadfast supporters that kept us going. He will be sorely missed and long remembered by all. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to the wounded warrior's project, in Keith's name. Donations can be made at The Wounded Warrior Project.

### Recent Preparedness Expo Indicates Pent-up Demand for Survival and Preparedness Information

The paradox of the survival/preparedness movement is that when serous disasters are actually happening, it is difficult to do survival education events. A few years ago, there were frequent preparedness expos throughout the Country and the sale of preparedness book was brisk. The advent of a truly global disaster shut down the book stores, closed the venues for expositions, and made gatherings hazardous**. At the same time the events of 2020 finally woke up vast portions of the population to the need for survival training and gear.** It also reenergized existing prepper survival practitioners to renew their efforts and rebuild their networks. Live Free USA was forced to cancel it annual meeting and the Camp Independence event due to the closure of venues, but continued to publish information in American Survivor and on our website.

A Live Free group in Northwest Indiana had scheduled a small preparedness exposition and seminar for this September fifth at the Gary Sportsman Club. In Crown Point. As the effects of the pandemic and the restrictions took affect it was difficult to know how such an event could still be held, but positivity rates came down a bit and restrictions were modified enough to proceed. While indoor facilities were available, the weather was so nice that everything was moved outdoor where it was safer. Vendors used tents, kiosks, or just open tables. Classes were held in a large picnic shelter, and food was available from a vendor. For a small one-day regional event, this one was well attended and the level of support and participation was high. The Live Free USA table sold out almost all of its books and recruited a number of new members. We were especially gratified to see many veteran members returning to “active duty”. **This small expo provided a good indication of the pent-up interest in survival training and literature. Now (at last) no one can deny the potential for massive disasters and the fragility of our society and support systems**. All Live Free groups should plan now on sponsoring seminar’s, expos and other events in 2021. As the pandemic resides (we hope) we will face other looming threats to life and freedom that we must prepare our families and communities for. **We will publicize all events in our newsletter, on our website and Facebook page.**

*Note: Human nature dictates that after a major disaster people tend to go into a period of apathy and false security. The reality is that another disaster or disasters is no less probable the day after than it was the day before the most recent event. Wishful thinking and the desperate need for “normalcy” can work against preparedness and common sense.*

Live Free USA Established the first American Survival Center in Wisconsin in the late 1970’s. We conducted extended scenario based and realistic training there. Unfortunately we were forced to sell that property after about ten years due to lack of support.

Since then we have used state and private facilities to conduct outdoor survival, self-defense, self-reliance and disaster survival education programs. The use of these facilities is limited and often prohibitive for some of the types of training we would want to do. We had all of the facilities listed below and would want to establish them again. A new survival training facility or even several facilities could serve Live Free and multiple organizations, providing responsible, safe and effective survival education for the challenges to life and freedom in this century.

+ Secure access control and parking
+ Comfortable and private camping facilities
+ Picnic and training shelter and building
+ Meeting building
+ Sanitary facilities
+ First aid and rescue training area
+ Primitive camping and survival training area
+ Unarmed combat training area
+ A rifle and pistol target range
+ A combat rifle and pistol range
+ An archery and primitive weapons range
+ Nature trail with edible and medicinal plants

Live Free USA Has established a Go Fund Me page to gather funding for this project. Members and supporters can [make contributions through GoFundMe](https:/charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/national-survival-education-center1). Members are encouraged to publicize this link through Facebook and other social media platforms.

### Other Funding Opportunities

While Live Free does not have the funds to acquire property and build facilities, we do have the funds to sponsor a campaign to raise funds and donations for this project.

+ Conduct fund raising events and raffles.
+ Solicit donations from members and non-members
+ Solicit pledges and donations for survival related businesses and organizations
+ Establish partnerships and sell shares or planks in the center to other organizations, corporations and individuals.

The mission of Live Free USA is now and has always been the preservation of life and freedom of ALL good citizens. In essence our core principle is that **all lives matter**. Of course black lives matter, but as a slogan or mission it is by definition discriminatory and divisive. **All lives matter** is the only acceptable, unifying and positive proclamation. We have also held that “in times of crisis we must all turn TO each other not ON each other” or as Ben Franklin put it “we must all hang together or we will surely hang separately”, yet the extreme left has succeeded in creating division and hatred in the midst of our facing a common menace that should be uniting all Americans. Any slogan that is racial exclusive should be a problem for thinking Americans. **All lives matter** is a moral imperative and a practical necessity for the survival human life and individual freedom now and in the future. We must not let extremist and anarchist slogans and rhetoric divide us. **Life matters** and **freedom matters**.

## Peru Indiana Chapter Organizing

We have a new active chapter in the North Central Indiana region. This is a key area for Live Free as we have held our annual Camp Independence at the nearby Tippecanoe River State Park for decades, and have accumulated a large membership in the region. We look forward to working with this group as we plan for Camp Independence 2021 and beyond. To get involved and be informed about their activities contact: [bushmaster_1776@yahoo.com](mailto:bushmaster_1776@yahoo.com)

## Wabash Valley (Lafayette) Chapter Organizing

This chapter is already off to a great start, and leadership is planning activities and meetings to meet the challenges of preparedness and survival for our time. Join now by contacting: [srsatlaf@gmail.com](mailto:srsatlaf@gmail.com)

## Chicago Chapter Coming Soon

New leadership is working to reestablish Live Free’s Chicago area operations. Chicago was the birthplace of Live Free USA, but has been inactive in recent years. While we have had plenty of requests for the development of a chapter there, we have not been able to find aggressive and proactive leaders who would initiate programs and activities. We have a team working to develop a new chapter. Anyone interested in getting involved should contact [survivorjj@aol.com](mailto:survivorjj@aol.com) , and the email will be routed to the organizers. Watch this newsletter for further information.

When the current crisis is past the odds of another pandemic or other world-wide emergency are exactly the same as they were the day before this one started. There is absolutely no excuse for a sigh of relief, or period of apathy.

I was talking with a few long-time members a few weeks before the coronavirus outbreak prohibited meetings and closed the stores. I mentioned that I had a stock of N95 masks and latex gloves at home and a few in my pockets. I said “as am sure you all do too”, but instead of hearing “oh yea” or “absolutely” I got uncomfortable silence. I realized that while I had gotten lip service, nods and even applause for my books, articles and presentations, many had ignored or procrastinated on actually following my recommendations. Of course, by the time of that conversation N95 respirators and latex gloves were already impossible to find. Yes! I actually meant that people needed to do the things that I advocated NOW (years ago) not wait until the emergencies occurred. As a Safety Manager in industry, I was constantly fighting to keep employees safe by wearing safety-glasses, and safety-shoes. The employee’s priority was comfort over safety, until it was too late. While in Oakland California examining how the factory there was recovering from the 1994 Northridge earthquake, I visited a local big-box store, and found earthquake preparedness kits on a “closeout sale” collecting dust as apathy had already set in. Over my fifty-plus years of advocating, writing about, and teaching emergency preparedness I have been subject to disparagement and even derision. It is human nature to not want to think about bad things. It is human nature to put off preparedness in favor of immediate needs. Disasters are things that happen to other people at other times, right?

Nature and human nature dictate that there will be a next major emergency and human nature dictates that many humans will not be prepared for it. Natural disasters are just nature’s way of adjusting geological, and biological imbalances. It’s nothing personal, but nature doesn’t care what gets destroyed (civilization) or what gets killed (us) in the proses. Man-made disasters are the product of human pride, complacency, greed, hubris and arrogance. We make them happen or we let them happen and we make them worse. They are unavoidable because humans are human.

History tells us that after major disasters a period of lethargy and over confidence sets in. It is natural for people and governments to focus on preparing for the most recent disaster at the expense of recognizing and preparing for other types of threats. FEMA was focused on the nuclear threat when 9/11 happened, they were prepared for Terrorism when Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. They have been focused on climate related issues until the pandemic. We can be sure that FEMA will focus on being more prepared for the next (there will be a next) pandemic, they will be less prepared for other mass disasters including cyber-attacks, nuclear events, mass civil disorder and other “surprise disasters”. Disasters are by nature, unpredictable in character and scope, and it is impossible for any national or state government to have everything and everyone needed to respond to every possible scenario. In reality a major disaster like the current one will deplete resources, damage the economy, and create social instability, that makes further disasters more likely.

For those of you who ignored our recommendations in the past and were lucky enough to get through this disaster, now is the time to get serious about preparedness! You have survived a “near miss” that should be a wakeup call not an excuse for complacency and procrastination. You have been granted this opportunity to save yourself and your family in the future. Some get a second chance, few get a third.

For those of you who were prepared and used your acquired skills and equipment to ride out the virus and the secondary effects of shortages, disorder, and unemployment, this is the time to restock and rededicate to preparedness like never before. The next disaster could be next week, next year or a few years off, and yes it could be even worse and of longer duration.

Again: being able to shelter in place and survive completely isolated from society and completely independent of the grid for food, water, sanitation, medical care, police protection, and other critical needs for from 60 to 90 days (minimum) is the ONLY way to survive most serious emergencies.

Again: being able to evacuate from your home and community in the event that your home is destroyed or unsafe is a necessity, but should be avoided when possible.

Surviving one disaster does not make you any safer or less likely to be faced with another-one, but it should make you smarter tougher and more prepared

While you can’t shoot a virus or a hurricane, civil unrest often follows any kind of disaster and may kill as many or more than the original cause of a disaster. Having some form of firearm available must be part of your preparedness. Socio-economic disruption generates increased crime and the potential for civil disorder when police response may be limited or unavailable. I such cases you are responsible for the protection of your own life and that of loved ones.

Finally: we hope that we will receive more support from the public and more active support from our members after this first example of the new normal for the twenty-first century. Membership has been declining for the past several years and members (even officers) have put very few hours into helping us. We are the only not-for-profit, tax-deductible organization dedicated to promoting individual and family emergency preparedness, yet our future survival is in doubt? We have never received a sponsorship, grant or significant contribution. We can only hope to be around to inform and educate good citizens to face future survival challenges.

What Has Past Is Prologue

It’s not like we didn’t see this coming. The inevitably of a world-wide pandemic has been addressed in multiple ways for the past decade in issues of American Survivor. These back issues are available to all online members.

A Very Short History of Live Free USA

Live Free USA started as an NRA Shooting Club on the Southside of Chicago in the late 1960’s. This was a time when Chicago was beginning to initiate its draconian gun laws so we diversified into an outdoor sports club. While we still engaged in shooting sports when and where we could, we added rock-climbing, cross-country skiing, camping, rafting and caving to our programs. We also started teaching survival skills and conducting survival-training activities. We soon were camping in the middle of winter and testing equipment and techniques under survival conditions. The temporary fuel shortages and recession of the 70’s combined with the nuclear threat of the Cold War increased interest in all aspects of survival and we expanded our programs to cover nuclear, biological and chemical war survival as well as general self-reliance skills. At this time there were several national publications devoted to survival related subjects, including American Survival Guide and Practical Survival. This allowed us to advertise and build a national and international membership. We also launched our own newsletter titled Directions in 1977. This was later changed to the current American Survivor. We also had raised enough money to buy land for The American Survival Center” in Wisconsin. In the late 70s the news media began to run stories about “survivalists”, but they had simply attached the title to a variety of religious, political and racial extremist groups that were prevalent at the time. Live Free was faced with the challenge of correcting these misrepresentations, while defining the true survival, self-reliance philosophy. We had some excellent spokesmen, positive explanations and excellent, ongoing activities to use in our campaign. We were interviewed on national television, scores of magazines and newspapers and even were on Dutch television and the BBC. We did get neutral or positive coverage because we had the right message and refused to be manipulated by the media. This was a time when we recruited some of the core membership that would hold the organization together and serve as the framework for future growth. We continued slow growth through the 80s, but the public’s misunderstanding of our mission kept impeding our progress and outreach efforts. The collapse of the Soviet Union that ended the Cold War in the early 90s, coupled with a temporary increase in oil supplies and economic growth created a false sense of euphoria and security. The vast majority of the public was sure that the age of peace, safety and prosperity had come and that the coming millennia would be even better. Our analysis of the world’s resources, economics and history told us that this was a very dangerous illusion, but no one wanted to hear that. Most survival groups and publications when out of business by the mid 90’s. Our membership and funds plummeted and we had been forced to sell of the American Survival Center property. We were only able to have a few activities each year and the publication of the newsletter was sporadic at best. The Twenty-first Century quickly revealed the growing cracks in national and world stability. As catastrophes of every variety began to multiply throughout the world, the public started to slowly awaken to their insecure present and threatening future. This time the need for preparedness was acknowledged and acceptable. This time advocating family self-reliance for a long-term or indefinite disintegration of the systems that we have come to depend on was not being rejected. Unfortunately, it took Live Free’s remaining staff and limited funds a while to catch up with the demand for information and programs, but we still had a solid framework, and core group with 30-pluse years of dedication and experience. We had to work very hard to regain recognition and rebuild our membership. We were able to put on our survival education programs in public venues that would have rejected us in the 70s and 80s. We are actually able to work with local fraternal, emergency response and community organizations in many locations. Membership, chapter formation and the number of programs continue to increase at a geometric rate as we bring together and support more and more skilled and dedicated survival and self-reliance instructors, writers and organizers. The challenge now is to carry out our mission while people can still travel to seminars and meetings and afford to buy the survival and self-reliance supplies and tools they will need. While our programs will continue to support preparedness for common home emergencies, localized disasters and outdoor survival situations, our larger missions must be to:

Increase public awareness of the unavoidable economic decline and associated disasters, emergencies, hardships and conflicts that it will generate in the next decades.

Proved a variety of educational programs and training events that will help good people adapt to the future challenges and survive the very serious dangers and disasters to come.

Build a national network of chapters that can provide improved survival resources for their members and be a framework for community survival, as situations grow more severe.

The fulfillment of these missions into the next decade will depend much on the commitment and dedication of the newest members to continue the work started almost 50-years ago.

In the coming months Live Free USA will be moving forward with several projects and improvements. The challenges and hazards of the coming years demands that we strengthen our base and expand our membership. With a larger and more active board of directors we are now able to pursue multiple objectives.

Website Improvement

We are working to creat a more attractive and interactive website with more functions for online members. We also hope to have more activity in the survival medicine, chapter activities, and other specialized pages. We are also exploring ways to offer discounts to members who purchase survival gear through the site.

Chapter and Affiliated Organization Support

One of our directors will function as the Chapter, Affiliate Coordinator, regularly communicating with each chapter and providing support and and involvement. A Chapter Leaders handbook will be available by early 2020 and maybe a regular Chapter Leaders online newsletter.to follow.

Permanent Survival Training Facility

A land-site in northern Indiana is being developed as a site to conduct advance survival and self-reliance training operations. This site should be available in early 2020. The site will include campsites, sanitary facilites, a traing building, and a rifle and pistol range. We are seeking donations and pledges to help us make improvements and maintain the facility.

Added Value to Membership

A members Handbook will be available by the end of 2019. The book wil include information about Live Free organization and philosophy, but will also containe valuable survival information. It will be available online free and a printed version will be available at nominal cost. We may increase membership fees slightly and include the handbook with all new memberships. Other ideas are being considerd to add value to membership.

Expanded Survival Instructors and Programs

Camp Independence will continue at Tippecanoe River State Park in Indiana, but may be franchised to other locations throughout the USA. We also plan to revive our Certified Survival Instructors program to develop new instructors and support current instructors.

Opportunities to Get Involved

We currently have two opening for Directors to the Board of Directors. These posted can be filled by designation by the board untill the next election. Filling these posts will definitely help us reach the above goals. Additionally the board is authorized to designate Deputy Directors and establish teams to work on projects. We would welcome hearing from members new and old who want to get involved and active. Since we now use the internet and online meetings it is not necessary for officers to reside in any nearby location.

Ultimately, gun rights are about the right to life and freedom. There is no point in talking about emergency preparedness, survival and self-reliance for an unarmed population.

Live Free USA began as a shooting club in the late 1960s. By the 1970s guns and gun ownership was under such assault that being a “gun club” in Chicago was impossible. It is probably impossible for any of our readers now to comprehend the level of harassment, persecutions, prosecution and prohibitions imposed on us in those times. It seemed inevitable that we would be forced to use muzzle loaders and cross-bows in defense of our lives and our freedoms. The NRA at that time was not a political force and liberals ran rough-shod over the constitution and anyone who sought to exercise the second amendment rights. Live Free broadened our activities to include survival education and civil-defense while keeping our gun related activity’s underground. The acceptability of shooting sports, concealed-carry and military-style rifles today has been achieved through decades of struggle. Since there are many great gun-rights advocacy groups today, Live Free focuses on our core survival and self-reliance mission, but remembering that the capacity for armed defense and resistance is an essential part of survival and self-reliance, I will enumerate some of our positions related to the issue of so-called military-style rifles that have been so maligned in recent weeks.

The ownership of so-called, military-style rifles with high-capacity magazines has nothing to do with hunting or sports shooting. It’s about citizens maintaining the potential to resist foreign or domestic subjugation and oppression. This does not imply that owners of such weapons are revolutionary, extremists or members of formal militias. They consciously or subconsciously accept the reality that the freedom and security of their families and future generations depends on maintaining the balance of force between the state and the people. Owners of these weapons have the upmost respect for the laws and the government, but they do so by choice and responsibility, not by fear and submission.

The major difference between the way American citizens think and the way subjects of other countries think originates from the fact that most other peoples were granted their liberties by the state and still believe that power flows from the state, while Americans fought for their freedoms and know that they are the ultimate source of freedoms and authority. This difference in origins creates an instinctual propensity to be armed or have access to arms that is not shared by citizens of other nations. It is no coincident that America has the oldest government on the planet and the most individual freedoms.

Ultimately: the right to keep and bear arms” is an extension of the human right to self-protection that exists regardless of written laws. It follows that one must have the means to exercise that right. One cannot be expected to defend oneself against an armed assailant or an oppressive despot with anything less than what that assailant or oppressor may have. We could not exercise the right to free speech if we were limited to old printing presses while the government controlled the mass media and the internet. We could not exercise freedom of religion if it was limited to only ancient texts and methods. So we cannot effectively exercise the right to keep and bear arms if we are limited to anything less than the best and most modern equipment.

The constitution does not say “hunting being a necessity”, it does not say “the ability to resist crime being important” it says “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”. There is no ambiguity in this sentence. The second amendment is about military-style arms. We are guaranteed the right to own, keep and bear military-style arms by the constitution. The term “regulated” in the eighteens century was defined as well managed or well-maintained, but not regulated by law as the word is used today. The final four words “shall not be infringed” specifically prohibits any form of taxation or governmental action that interferes with this essential right. The founders did use the generic term ”arms” even though the contemporary “arms” were muzzle-loading muskets and swords. In fact they were referring to the “military-style” weapons of that time, but these were intelligent, forward thinking man who anticipated advancements and certainly wanted future citizens to “keep and bear” arms that would be equal to those of criminals, invaders and would-be tyrants of the future.

The missus of a right by a few does not justify the prohibition of that right to others. Trading freedom and responsibility for safety is the poorest bargain a people can make. Ask the Russians, or the Chines, or the North Koreans or the Mexicans or anyone from a hundred oppressed, depressed and crime-ridden nations that we do not want to live in. The loss of lives caused by a few evil and mentally-ill individuals is truly tragic, but cannot justify turning our back on the freedoms that were bought with the lives and sacrifices of generations of veterans. Yes, they died for the second amendment as well as our other freedoms and surrendering any of those freedoms is a betrayal of their sacrifices.

In a world spiraling towards increasing political strife, civil disorder, street crime, economic instability, potential epidemics, increasingly severe disasters and terrorist activities, only the most irresponsible and pacified citizen can fail to see their duty to be prepared to meet violent situations in the future. While the anti-gun movement may be lead (or mislead) by the youth, it is those between the ages of 15 and 25 that may most regret no having access to military-style weapon and ammunition just a few decades in the furfure. In fact one may want to consider purchasing additional such arms and ammunition to be stored and distributed in the future to the next generations that may desperately need them.

In Short: Any action that limits the access to modern, effective military-style firearms to law abiding citizens of the United States is specifically unconstitutional, philosophically un-American, and functional dangerous to the future of life and freedom for us all.

LIVE FREE USA 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Looking back and Looking Ahead, by James C. Jones, Founder and President

Most significant organizations are formally created with the involvement and support of financially stable, business and professional founders. Live Free USA evolved from a group of poor city kids who liked to go camping. We have established the year nineteen-sixty-eight as the formal start of Live Free USA because that’s about when we started practicing, advocating and educating for survival and self-reliance. The organization started as an NRA affiliated shooting sports club and expanded into other outdoor sports including rock climbing, caving, river rafting, primitive camping and archery. The potential for injuries and the need for first aid and safety training brought us to focus on survival related issues. Membership was primarily limited to the South-side of Chicago in the 1960's and the draconian gun laws and vehement anti-gun sentiments (much greater than today) made operations as a “gun club’ unsustainable so we evolved into a “sports club” but continued to do shooting activities out of town. The political turbulence of the late 1960's combined with the growing threats of the Cold War drew the organization into the broader aspects of emergency preparedness and self-reliance while we continued to conduct outdoor survival training as well. We also began to attract membership beyond the Chicago area. At this time we started publishing our survival newsletter. Originally titled “Directions” and mimeographed it became todays “American Survivor” a respected source of survival information for over 40-years.

In the late 1960's we started doing annual training programs at Tippecanoe River State Park in norther Indiana. The park offered cabins and a huge training area for a reasonable price. This event evolved it what became the annual “Camp Independence” survival education event. We first rented just one cabin, but by the late 1970's we were renting the entire, 50 building facility including dining halls, shelters, an infirmary, showers and housing for hundreds of participants. We were able to conduct combination indoor and outdoor training programs, drills and scenarios that were beyond anything being done today by any survival organization. Camp Independence continued until 2015 when the Indiana Department of Resources elected to close the facilities. This was a major blow to our training programs, since no equivalent facilities existed. It is sad to note that the reason for closure was primarily that very few groups used it. The organizations that had previously held events and gatherings there have either disbanded or become less willing to cope without heat, AC and lights. To many folks Tippecanoe and Live Free were synonyms.

We really hoped to develop our own version of the facilities at Tippecanoe River State Park in the 1970's. We started selling shares of our “land fund” and doing car washes to raise money to buy some land. Against all odds, we managed to get sufficient funds to purchase 20-acres of beautiful wooded property in Wisconsin. We set up a camp area, rifle range, and other facilities and eventually acquired an adjoining 20- acres. We called it “The American Survival Center” (I still have the sign), but a combination of events forced us to sell it off in the mid 80's. One of the reasons that we do the paperwork to maintain our current not-for-profit, tax deductible status is the hope that we might receive a contribution, bequest or grant that would revive the dream of a true “American Survival Center.” Certainly there is a greater need than ever for such a facility with so many camp facilities closing.

The 1980's brought Live Free USA into the national and even international spotlight. We noted that the media was suddenly interested in “survivalists” but had been attracted to extreme political and religious groups who may have been practicing survival skills, but were not (in our view) real survivalists. Having been at it for two decades, we were far ahead of others in actual practices. For several years we worked to promote the true philosophies and practices of survivalism. Media helicopters landed at Tippecanoe and at the American Survival Center. We did dozens of interviews for radio, TV and major publications. We even talked on the BBC and Dutch TV. I was privileged to speak at the American Society for Civil Defense on two occasions. Through this publicity we built up a national membership and even some international members. We still had to manage with our very limited number of overworked volunteers and no significant financial support, and this severely limited our ability to build on our success or expand our programs. The cover of the 1986 issue of American Survival Guide was dedicated to Live Free USA's years of service. Live Free’s reputation, core group and missions were all established in the 1980's, but the preparedness movement almost collapsed in the early 1990's.

Although Live Free USA never considered nuclear war as the only or even primary survival and preparedness motivation, the public jumped to the conclusion that the fall of the Soviet Union was the beginning of the age of peace and security. All of the survival magazines soon ceased publication and all of the other survival organizations evaporated. Without magazines to advertise in we dwindled down to a small number of loyal national members and a hardcore group locally. We still held Camp Independence at Tippecanoe and got out our newsletter sporadically. In short, Live Free went into a survival mode of conserving resources and maintaining our local core membership. By the late 1990's support for preparedness and survivalist began to revive as terrorism, economic instability, natural disaster, epidemics and other obvious challenges began to be recognized by the public. Variations of survivalist such as the “prepper” movement and the “homesteading” movement began to emerge. At the same time the internet provided a new avenue for Live Free to outreach, network, promote and organize. The dawn of the Twenty-First Century brought with it multiple natural and man-made disasters combined with a matrix of potential survival challenges that established preparedness and survival education as a major requirement for the public. Some new preparedness magazines were in publication, and preparedness expositions were being held throughout the country.

The early part of this century has seen Live Free reestablish itself as the leading organization for survival and preparedness. While members can join on-line through our website at AmericanSurvivor.org, we still provide hard-copy mailings to all those who prefer that method. Our American Survivor newsletter remains the only continuously published survival publication from the 1970's and Live Free USA has been advertised in most national survival magazines in recent years. We have several active chapters and conduct multiple training events annually. Live Free USA and Live Free chapter groups have exhibited and presented at dozens of preparedness expositions. Unlike the 1980's when Live Free was the major focus of media attention and the public actually joined and participated in organized groups, today the internet fragments and dilutes the public’s attention on any one group and the public tends to prefer virtual rather than real involvement. Hard-copy publications are often replaced by a video or blog. There are literally thousands of survival websites and hundreds of survival and preparedness (for profit) suppliers and trainers. This has made it difficult for Live Free to grow as it did in the 80's, but we are an important part of the growing movement.

This organization started with a number of handicaps that most organizations don’t have.

We started without any support or sponsorships at all and the members themselves could not afford much in the way of contributions until much later.

We had no lawyers, accountant’s businessmen, or other professionals to help us build the organization. Most groups have a lot of pro-bono help. Most groups have members taking care of the website, tax documents and other issues, we do not.

We have no sponsors or significant donations and have never received any kinds of grants.

Telling folks that they need to prepare for some bad times is not necessarily popular. Unless there has been a recent disaster or serious scare event interest and support drops.

Although we are classified as a “public charity” by the IRS we don’t get any of the support that a group like the Red Cross or Boy Scouts will receive. In fact we get less than $100.00 per year in contributions even though we conduct our education programs for free.

Other than memberships and a few book sales we have no solid financial support system.

When membership increases and/or activities multiply, the same few volunteers get overloaded and we are forced to reduce operations when we should be increasing them.

We have no actual headquarters, office or training facility from which to efficiently expand operations and house a staff. Only a major grant or contribution will address this issue.

We have a lot of training equipment and supplies and there are some bequests that may come to Live Free in the years to come, but the equipment may need to be disposed of if they are not going to be used, and the organization must still exist for the bequests to be made in the future.

When I retired from my day job a few years ago I determined to give a final push to get Live Free to a point of sustainable growth and solid operation. I traveled to many preparedness expositions, wrote for many magazines and put aside some personal priorities in favor of building Live Free. We have had some notable successes, but I am disappointed that we have not attracted more young leadership and outside financial support. Illnesses and age among our core members has begun to seriously degrade our operations. Developments in the next 12 to 24 months will determine the future of the organization. Live Free USA is the only tax-deductible, not-for-profit organization in the United States (maybe the world) dedicated to healing people prepare for survival situations and become more self-reliant. Certainly, there has never been a greater need for what we do, yet our existence is in jeopardy.

I welcome everyone's suggestions and participation as we go forward. Please consider attending our 50th Annual Meeting on March 24th at 1:00 PM in Cabela's Conference Center in Hammond IN.

The Live Fee USA bylaws have always provided for the establishments of teams to assure coverage of all survival and preparedness related issues. These teams have acted as agencies to advance their specialties and then lead training events to improve that capacity among all Live Free groups and members. Until last year the “Safety and Security” Director was elected. The changes in the bylaws now assigns all specific tasks to designated “coordinators”. At one time our safety and security team was extremely well trained and conducted internal field training as well as external classes. Unfortunately this team has been largely inactive for several years. We know that we have a number of members trained in various aspects of self-protection, home defense, and related skills that can be the core of a revitalized team. This group would:

Thoughts from Alaska

[gallery ids="1318,1319,1320,1321,1323,1324,1325,1326,1327"]
I finally got around to seeing Alaska. Simply put: you should not leave this life without seeing this beautiful l and unique place. My limited time and budget allowed me to visit only a few locations, but I would like to share my observations with you. My visit was in late July and covered the south coastal area near Anchorage, the Denali National Park and the interior around Fairbanks. I experienced the cold in the glacial fiords, and the rather mild temperatures of the interior. I was fortunate to talk to members of indigenous tribes, long-time residents and transient residents as well. Anchorage is a pretty typical small city with a skyline and plenty of urban refinements. Fairbanks is a rougher sort of modern frontier town. Remember that they are over 300-miles apart with no other populated areas or road networks for a thousand miles. This is a unique environment! I will not dwell on the glaciers, mountains, boat trips and rail road’s trains. Instead, I will focus on the items that may be of interest to all of you self-reliance and survival types out there.
Less heat means less atmospheric energy and this results in less wind. Thunderstorms, tornadoes and high winds are far less frequent in a perpetually cool environment so wind power is not effective. Solar panels are common. Because of the low angle of the sun, they are set almost vertically. The extra-long summer days provide direct solar energy throughout at least 6-months. Propane seems to be the preferred fuel source in winter, supplemented with wood.
The Japanese current in the ocean modifies the climate in the Anchorage area so that it’s rather chilly in summer (like Seattle) but milder than the interior in winter. In fact, it’s only about 10 degrees colder than Chicago (on average) with fewer days of snow. However, in the fiords of Prince William Sound they are cold all the time and get 70-feet (yes feet) of snow. Everyone in Whittier lives in one building and the kids use a tunnel to get to school.
While the summer is short, the long days accelerate growing so that huge vegetables and grain crops provide most of Alaska’s needs in a few months. Most families get about 80% of their protean from fishing and hunting. Virtually everyone fishes and hunts. Refrigeration is no problem with a six month winter and permafrost just a few feet below. While down in the lower 48-states we recommend that people stock up to be isolated for 4-6 months this is normal procedure for many Alaskans
Out in the suburbs and rural areas water supplies are an issue. If you have a stream it freezes in winter and you need to use an axe and stove to get water. Wells and piped water are going to freeze. If you have a dry cabin (with no stream) you go into town with a tank in the back of your pickup truck and buy water for home use. I observed many trucks with 200 gallon tote-tanks on the roads.
The Athabaskan Indians are the largest tribe in the interior. They retain many of their traditions, but have adopted plenty of modern conveniences as well. Spread out over millions of square miles of tundra and wilderness it is challenging for them to get an education. The children come to the towns in summer and homeschool in winter. I found them to be intelligent and friendly people. As I suspected (and teach) these folks survive the extreme cold by eating calories and staying insulated, not by building big fires. Clothing and food are their primary survival methods, with fire as a temporary and auxiliary method. There is plenty of fur available to the natives, but otter fur is the most effective. There is more fur on one-inch of otter pelt than on an entire German Sheppard. Mink was generally used only for cabin insulation until they found that they could sell it
Alaska is true wilderness. At the end of the one lane gravel road into Denali National Park you can walk on for over 400-miles without encountering a single sign of human existence. A bear (we saw lots of them) can be born and live out its entire life without ever encountering a human being. There are still folks who live in cabins with no trail or roads for access. They get supplies by bush-pilot plans or whistle stop trains.
I was surprised to note that the mix of “normal” cars and 4-whell drive vehicles was about the same as in Indiana. Some people have a summer car and a winter truck. While there were plenty of hanging baskets of flowers, there was not much attention to lawns or fancy flower beds. Not many BBQ grills or patios either. Summer is just too short for such things. They do embrace the winter with all kinds of games and festivals. Since many areas are only accessible by aircraft landing on ice, water or tundra strips. The older more durable airframes are in great demand. In addition to the ubiquitous DC 3s , Pipers and Cessnas’ I observed some 1940s and 50s vintage Lockheed and Boing prop planes.
People who live in Alaska, love Alaska. They are freer and more self-reliant by choice and necessity. While the lower 48 needs Alaska for it gold (still lots up there), oil and salmon, Alaska is pretty much self-sufficient. I felt rather at home there.

At a recent preparedness expo I observed a demonstration of an “in home” freeze drying machine. Up until now, freeze-drying was been the one food preservation option not available to most preppers. We can dehydrated, smoke, pickle, cure and can, but we have to pay a high price for freeze-dried foods. Freeze-dried survival foods are by fare the lightest weight and longest lasting of all survival food supplies, but are also the costliest. A dollar’s worth of beef stew can cost from $6.00 to $8.00 in a freeze-dried package. Purchasing a six-month or one-year food stock of freeze-dried is a considerable investment.

The Harvestright ™ freeze-drying machine is about the size of a vey large microwave. The machine freezes the foods down to around 40 below zero and then vacuums away all of the moisture content. Finally the food is vacuum-sealed in oxygen and moisture proof packages. The manufacturer claims that 97% of the nutritional value of the food is preserved with a shelf life of over 25-years.

At this point the machine sells for a hefty $4,000.00. You would save about $5.00 to $6.00 per freeze-dried meal so you would need to do about 600 to 800 meals to pay off the machine. This may not be cost effective for a person or family, but could be a good business investment or cooperative purchase for a survival/preparedness group. Cost may come down some, but the need for the refrigeration, dehydration and vacuum systems will probably sustain prices well above $1,000.00 for years to come.

For more information go to: Harvestright.com or call 1-800-923=4673.

It has been a while since I made an entry. We were very, very buisy in September and October doing classes and meeting new people. Membership continues to grow and we have added several new chapters and alliances as well. November and December will be devoted to planning for 2012 and 2013. Keep two dates in mind (1) the Annual Meeting in Hammond IN on March 24th and the Camp Independance at Tippecanoe River State Park on the weekend of May 4-5-6. The empowerment and support of Live Free chapters is a high priority for the comming years. While each chapter may be at a different point in development and face different situations, they should have the same basic missions as follows.

The four prime missions of a Live Free USA chapter provide an unlimited challenge that should direct the efforts of every member indefinitely. None of these goals can be fully achieved, but offer a path to individual security and independence. Collectively, the success of multiple chapters and groups can make significant difference on how our communities and our nation survive and recover from the multiplicity of disasters and the general collapse of existing systems. They are intended to provide security, and safety without sacrificing choices and freedoms.

1. Member emergency preparedness support

Support members and their families in achieving the capability to survive and recover from common short and medium tern natural and man-made disasters without the support or interference of outside agencies. To this end, provide training, information, equipment and supplies in affordable and practical programs.

2. Member liberation through self-reliance

Support members and their families in achieving increased self-reliance and independence from centralized and failing sources of life essential needs such as food, water, energy, protection, and medical aid. Work to create semi-independent life style and economic network that reduces risks, regulation, taxes and waste, while improving life security and quality.

3. Strength through networking & mutual support

Recruit and develop new members, while developing networks with other Live Free chapters and organizations with compatible and like-minded goals. These networked communities of self-reliance will be able to exchange instructors, share resources, combine operations and purchases and engage in trade and barter for critical supplies and skill in an emergency.

4. Communtity service & education
